چکیده

Expression of the urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) increases during the progression of colorectal tumors from adenomas to carcinomas. The highest amounts of uPA are found at the invasion front of carcinomas, which also displays a strong expression of nuclear -catenin and is therefore a region expressing -catenin target genes at high levels. Here we show that -catenin contributes to the transactivation of uPA. Therefore, -catenin might have an impact on the capacity of colorectal tumors for invasion and metastasis, as well as dormancy, which are hallmarks of cancer.

Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) in the emergency department: An update

Background: The biomarker soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is an indicator of inflammation which is increased in a variety of chronic and acute disease states. Its most promising application in the emergency setting is to aid in the prognostic stratification of patients by identifying those at high risk of deterioration. This is a narrative review of studies evaluating t...

Deoxycholic acid activates beta-catenin signaling pathway and increases colon cell cancer growth and invasiveness.

Colorectal cancer is often lethal when invasion and/or metastasis occur. Tumor progression to the metastatic phenotype is mainly dependent on tumor cell invasiveness. Secondary bile acids, particularly deoxycholic acid (DCA), are implicated in promoting colon cancer growth and progression. Whether DCA modulates beta-catenin and promotes colon cancer cell growth and invasiveness remains unknown....

Increased metastatic dissemination in human melanoma xenografts after subcurative radiation treatment: radiation-induced increase in fraction of hypoxic cells and hypoxia-induced up-regulation of urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor.

Cancer patients showing local failure after radiation treatment have increased probability for developing metastatic disease. The mechanisms behind this observation have not been identified. In the present work, metastatic spread after inadequate radiation therapy was studied by using R-18 human melanoma xenografts as models of cancer in humans. Pimonidazole was used as a hypoxia marker, and hy...

Pro-urokinase up-regulates the expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA) in human pulmonary arterial endothelial cells.

The fibrinolytic function of endothelial cells plays an important role in the pathophysiology of pulmonary vascular diseases. In this study, the effects of pro-urokinase, a new thrombolytic drug that is currently being tested for the treatment of pulmonary embolism, on the expression of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA) and u-PA receptor (u-PAR) were assessed. The role of u-PAR was al...
